NCD LEVEL 1

Geomorphic Processes of Natural Channels in the Arid Southwest April 25-28, 2023

Please contact Natural Channel Design Engineering (workshops@naturalchanneldesign.com) to be added to a contact list for the next Level 1 Workshop.

NCD Engineering’s Level I “Geomorphic Processes of Natural Channels in the Arid Southwest” is an introductory workshop that focuses on providing information on how to recognize important stream features, how to conduct field measurement and analysis of basic stream dimensions, as well as analysis of stability and stream function. Participants will learn how to use the Rosgen Stream Classification system and how to use regional curves. If you work in riparian or stream habitats, aquatic ecology or water quality, or do work in watersheds that may affect downstream systems, then the information provided will help you collect, analyze, and interpret meaningful stream morphology data that provides insight into stream physical and ecological stability and function.

This is a four-day workshop that will be held and presented in Flagstaff, AZ. We will utilize local streams for our field work. Participants should come prepared to be outside and working in streams for an extended period of time. If you or your group have specific topics you would like to see covered in the course material, please give us a call and we will try to work it in.

The workshop cost is $1000/participant and includes transportation to field sites and lunch on field days. Our preferred method of payment is by check, EFT, or cash. We accept credit card phone payments for an additional convenience fee of $37 (added to cover third party merchant fees).

This workshop is limited to 20 participants. Please contact us for registration forms at (workshops@naturalchanneldesign.com) or call 928-774-2336.

NCD LEVEL 2

Inventory and Assessment of Stream Channels in the Arid Southwest

Please contact Natural Channel Design Engineering (workshops@naturalchanneldesign.com) to be added to a contact list for updates when the next Level 2 workshop will be held.

This is a 5-day workshop designed to introduce participants to practical field protocols for inventory, assessment, and monitoring physical characteristics of stream channels. Participants should have previously attended NCD Level I or Wildland Hydrology Level I & II Courses. This workshop includes classroom lecture and hands-on field experience.

Topics include:

  • The use of the David Rosgen’s Natural Channel Classification System
  • Field techniques for channel classification surveys
  • How to recognize and measure channel stability parameters
  • Stream assessment methodologies
  • Use of the BANCS and BEHI models to quantify streambank sediment production
  • Methods for determining stream competence and an introduction to stream sediment transport capacity
  • Field techniques for channel assessments (Pfankuch, SVAP, Vegetation Zones)
  • Objectives and field techniques for monitoring

Cost: $1,100/participant and includes transportation to field sites and lunch on field days. (Our preferred method of payment is by check, EFT or cash. We can accept credit card phone payments for an additional convenience fee of $3.75 added to cover third party merchant fees).

Space is limited to 20 participants so please contact Natural Channel Design Engineering (workshops@naturalchanneldesign.com) for registration forms or call 928-774-2336.
